Take a trip back in time! Join IFI’s tour of the Amish farming community in Arthur, Illinois, ! Discover a place where horses are still used to work the farm fields and Amish residents still get from place to place by horse and buggy. The Amish are resistant to many of the ways of modern society and choose to live simple lives, close to the land, with a high value on family. They generate their own electricity, grow and preserve some of their own food, educate their children in Amish schools through the eighth grade, and abstain from radio, television and computers. They do not keep a phone in the house in order to keep calls from interrupting their family life. While the Amish use English for their business interactions, they use an old form of the German language among themselves and in their religious services.
The main attraction for this event will be a noon dinner in an Amish home! You will really enjoy their famous country style cooking! They will have plenty of vegetarian options for those who request that. We will also tour the Amish countryside. Weather-permitting, we will see some Amish farmers out in the fields, using their teams of giant draft horses to carry out their spring planting tasks. The trip concludes with a stop at an Amish grocery store and gift shop. Bring a little extra cash for that. There will be plenty of opportunities for picture taking, but please be aware that, in the Amish culture, they do not want their faces photographed.
Space is limited for this event, so sign up soon on the form provided below if you are sure that you will attend. IFI is providing transportation for those who need it.
