On Saturday, February 1st, IFI will visit the Abraham Lincoln Museum and Lincoln’s home in Springfield, Illinois! This is a world-class museum that masterfully tells the story of a turning point period of time in US history, centered around one of our best known presidents, Abraham Lincoln. Learn about how a self-educated young man, who was born in a one-room log cabin, became a lawyer and, eventually, was elected President of the United States! Uncover the tragic social injustices in America’s early development. Discover how President Lincoln, during the four agonizing bloody years of the American Civil War, turned a nation toward a new day, abolished the institution of slavery, and preserved the union of all of its 36 states. Learn about the principles and faith that guided his path. After our visit at the museum, we will also tour Abraham Lincoln’s actual home a few blocks from there. He and his family lived there prior to the beginning of his presidency in 1860. Most of the furnishings are original.
The cost for this trip is $15. IFI transportation is $5 per person and the museum entry fee is $10. Payment is in cash only when we depart Orchard Downs – no card or digital payment is allowed. Children who are 4 years and under are free.
Transportation is limited and sign-up is required by Thursday noon, January 30th. Sign up only if you are positive that your will attend. We will all meet as a group at the Orchard Downs South Laundry, at 2050 S. Orchard St., Urbana, at 9:45 and arrive at the museum at 11:30. If you are driving your own car, please indicate that in your sign-up and please drive there along with the rest of the IFI vehicles when we leave Orchard Downs.
Take your own lunch to eat on the way there, or you can opt to buy lunch at the museum’s restaurant (cost is about $10 for a lunch there). Small locker spaces are available in the museum for 25 cents. There are gift shops at both stops as well. IFI will provide some late afternoon snacks and a bottle of water.
