Join IFI for a Saturday excursion on the 26th, amidst October’s fall color and harvest season, as we travel to Petersburg, Illinois. There, you will experience going back in time as you take in the reconstructed historical village of New Salem. This is where Abraham Lincoln lived and worked in his early adulthood. Discover the environment that influenced Lincoln’s early character-forming days, which ultimately carried him on to become the 16th president of the United States. He would prove to belong among the Nation’s greatest contributing presidents during one of the most trying periods in the Country’s history.
At New Salem, you will be entertained by period-clothed interpreters who will demonstrate daily tasks throughout the historic village. See candle dipping, soap making, spinning of wool, food processing, barrel making and more! Visitors can step down into the cellar at the tavern to see how fruits and vegetables were preserved during the winter. There will be food vendors there at the site, or just bring your own food and take a break in the village’s picnic area. An on-site restaurant called the Railsplitter Gifts and Eatery has a variety of foods including many vegetarian options. Transportation will be provided by IFI for those who need it for a fee of $10 per person. This fee will include a donation for entry into the event. Payment is in cash only (no credit or debit cards or online payment). Food and gifts would be an additional cost if you wish to purchase items there. We will contact you about your transportation pick-up details by Friday night. If you sign up, be sure to attend. Space for rides is limited. Cancelling at the last moment will keep others from enjoying this opportunity.
